The College of Southern Nevada, Department of Fine Arts will host an exhibition of digital illustration, augmented reality, animation, 3D projection and mixed media installation artwork by artist and Stetson University (FL) Assistant Professor of Digital Arts, Dengke Chen. Reframing Imagery will begin Friday, November 1 and will run through Saturday, December 7, 2019. Dengke Chen will participate in an Artist Talk on Monday, November 4, at 6 p.m. in the Fine Arts Gallery, Room H101, on the North Las Vegas Campus. An Opening Reception with refreshments will follow the Artist Talk.
Dengke Chen is an Assistant Professor of Digital Arts, Department of Creative Arts, Stetson University, Florida. His practice concentrates on new media art, 3D animation, hand-drawn animation, computer games, illustration, and comic art. Chen has presented, lectured and exhibited his artwork at notable national and international venues, film festivals and conferences. He received his Master of Fine Arts in New Media from Pennsylvania State University and his Bachelor of Arts in Animation from China Central Academy of Fine Arts.
Unlike the single narrative storytelling techniques used in traditional animations to amuse and entertain audiences, Chen's animations have nonlinear narratives that engage viewers to critically reflect on social and ethical issues. Through animation based on art practice, by projecting his thoughts and personal experience on distorted stories, Chen propose new insights and compels audiences to think about the unvarnished beauty and ugliness of the world. By bringing awareness of social problems and ethical issues, Chen uses his art to help the audience envision a world where every sentient being can live in harmony.
