History of the Holiday
Cinco de Mayo will be officially celebrated on Monday, May 5. It marks Mexico’s unexpected victory over French forces at the Battle of Puebla in 1862. While it’s a relatively minor holiday in Mexico, people in the United States celebrate vibrant Mexican culture and heritage, especially in communities with large Mexican-American populations.
The holiday gained traction in the U.S. during the Chicano Movement of the 1960s, as activists embraced the symbolic triumph of Indigenous Mexicans over European invaders. Today, Cinco de Mayo is celebrated with lively parades, mariachi music, folk dancing, and traditional foods like tacos and mole poblano. Major cities, including Los Angeles, Chicago, Houston, and New York City, host some of the most colorful festivities.
