“Winterreise” (Winter Journey) Friday November 30th at 7:00 PM and Saturday December 1st at 2:00 PM Choreographer Kelly Roth summarizes the theme of his new ballet set to Franz Schubert’s iconic song cycle, Winterreise as, “A wanderer, jilted and aging fast with backward glances of what was and what might have been.” For those familiar with this milestone of German art song, Roth’s curt description may seem shallow, cynical, and seriously inadequate considering the exalted place the work holds in the high art of western civilization. But Roth, the director of the College of Southern Nevada Dance Program, has been contemplating the work since he first encountered it in a high school music appreciation class some fifty years ago.
“After waiting so long to finally tackle this dance, the music has grown to nearly impossible grandness in my mind. Such reverence can lead to fears of artistic blasphemy for even attempting to weld movement to the poetic marriage the words and sound comprise. Reducing the overall concept to episodes relatable to my own experiences, both aesthetic and personal, seems to be doable and appropriate for our times.” The proof, it is said, will be in the pudding.
