EMAV 10 Bites: Katie Marie Jones, Performer

Updated: Mar 9, 2019

In every neighborhood, there is someone who makes the Arts a part of their life, and our community. You'd be surprised to discover how many different people use the arts to improve the quality of life in our hometown. EAT MORE ART! VEGAS will feature them regularly in our series "10 Bites."

What performing art do you do?

I mostly do Plays or Musicals in the Las Vegas Theatre Community and singing gigs in various venues around town!

Why do you do it?

I love telling stories more than anything. I love the feeling in the room when the energy is magnetic; the actors can feel the energy from the crowd and vice versa, it is an incredible shared experience between all involved.

What’s your favorite production/performance so far?

I am performing in Marie Antoinette at Majestic Repertory Theatre right now and this has honestly been the best experience that I have had theatrically in a long time. Getting to tell this story is so incredibly important to me. The whole show just came together almost flawlessly, the cast was all in from day one, the costumes, lighting, direction, set, and audiences have all merged together so wonderfully. Everything about this show has been magical from day one and I have been so lucky to get to share this story with the Las Vegas Community.

What jobs have you done other than being an artist?

Retail, Hostess at a dueling piano bar, Call Center Phone Operator, Princess for Children's Parties and Currently working in Interior Design as well as being an Artist!

What memorable responses have you had to your work?

I was in Bring it On! The Musical a few summers ago at Super Summer Theatre and I had a woman come up to us after the show; she shared a few personal stories about the trials and hardtimes she has had happen in her life recently and she said, " Thank you so much for this musical, for 2 hours you made me forget everything that was happening in my life, you gave me 2 hours of pure joy and put a smile on my face for the first time in a long time." I will never ever forget that; to piggyback off of the "Why do you do it" question... that is the exact reason I do theatre, why I am an artist so I can hopefully give as many people that burst of joy or smile that they haven't seen in a long time. To suck someone in to a story and help them escape the outside world.

What would you be doing if you weren't performing your art?

I wish I could answer this question; but honestly, not performing isn't really an option for me. But I will say that when I'm not performing, I am usually in a dance class, or eating Canes and playing with puppies.

Name something you love about Las Vegas, and why.

The community and the people; this city is so amazing because of the support from our community, I truly believe that most people in this town are genuinely supportive of others, always willing to help out our neighbors and friends. I have made my forever friends in this town and will always come back to do show's here because of the people!

What’s the best piece of advice you’ve been given?

It is such a cliche' thing to say; but I had a professor in college who always told me to be myself. This is something that I had heard my entire life but it didn't click until I was told this in a performance setting. I used to be very shy, quiet, never thought my talents were worth sharing with the world. I always looked at my peers and envied them for being better singers or dancers or actors than I was and was always comparing myself to them. Until I realized that I have something that those people will never have; me; those people will never be me and I will never be them and I shouldn't try to be. I was born with my own set of quirks and abilities that I should be focussing on. The second I let go of wanting to be someone else and looked at what I had to offer, I started working a lot more and became very confident in who I was as a performer; all because someone said "Just be yourself; who cares what those people have or what they are doing; they aren't you."

What superpower would you have and why?

Teleportation OR the ability to talk to animals!

Any future projects?

Very excited to be doing what I love!
