Sin City Opera & Cockroach Theatre Company in their first joint production bring two operatic premiers to Nevada audiences, Kurt Weill’s opera & ballet, The Seven Deadly Sins paired with Schoenberg’s Erwartung (Expectation).
The Seven Deadly Sins is a stunning showcase for both a singer and a dancer who each portray the conflicted Anna in this timeless ballet chanté. Away from home for the first time, Anna is on a seven year, seven-city journey through the United States to make some cash and buy her family a little house in Louisiana. “As the temptations and torments of the big bad world test her moral compass, Anna finds herself torn between her pious past and the thrill of the future. Returning home may never be the same. Directed by Darren Weller. Beloved Las Vegas Strip performer, Dina Emerson, will take on the role of Anna I in Weill’s, The Seven Deadly Sins, her first engagement since recently retiring from Cirque du Soleil’s Mystère. Erwartung (Expectation) is based on the conception of a woman, lost in the forest, as she searches for her lover in this monologue for Soprano by modernist master Arthur Schoenberg. A second of time is stretched out over 30 minutes as we are swept into the emotional and musical landscape that is her mind. St-Pierre was moved to direct this piece due it the intense dissidence and journey. The first live opera shown on Times Square in New York City in a production by Robin Rhode in November 2015, Erwartung, along with Berg's Wozzeck and Stravinsky's The Rite of Spring, is considered by many to be among the "impregnable" "great monuments of modernism. Directed by Kate St-Pierre. The role of “A Woman” will be played by Rebecca Morris,International Dramatic Soprano, who has performed with American Institute of Musical Studies in Graz, Austria, The Bay Area Summer Opera Theater Institute and The Opera Academy of California in San Francisco, The Crittenden Opera Theater Institute in Washington DC, and the “Flagstaff in Fidenza” program in Fidenza, Italy, as well as Arizona Opera and Phoenix Opera before moving to Las Vegas to raise her children.
