“GO TO THE DEPTHS, O’ MY DARLING” GEEK! TAPS INTO YOUR INNER FANGIRL/BOY
The Onyx continues its Tenth Anniversary Season with GEEK!, a celebration of nerdy fan culture written by Brooklyn playwright Crystal Skillman and directed by Producing Director Troy Heard. With pissed-off Pikachus, steampunk armies, stood-up Sailor Moons and roller- blading monsters on the prowl, it's easy to get lost in the Inferno-esque anime convention where fans, otakus, andgeeksabound.
Buttoscorear are meeting with their comic book idol, teenage outcasts Dayna and Honey will take on obsessive magic players, Jedis and elfs, cosplayers and convention guards - through all nine flights of Ohio's Dante's Fire-Con. But when the dark nature of their quest breaks through the fantasy of these girls cosplaying - they find that no game can mask the deep loss they’ve recently shared ... unless they truly discover who they are.
“GEEK! is very similar to She Kills Monsters earlier this season,” says director Heard, “Both having premiered by New York’s Vampire Cowboys theatre company. However where that show explored relationships in a Dungeons and Dragons game, GEEK! approaches its characters through an anime lens with hyper stylized acting and fight scenes.” “GEEK!’s genius is that Skillman created a fictional anime world in Dante’s Fire so the viewer doesn’t have to have any preconceived geekdom knowledge to enjoy this show,” Heard explains. “And beyond all the comedy, our heroes experience real-life drama. This is a show our adult audiences can bring their teens to, and I can only imagine the great post-show discussions they’ll share.”
Performances of GEEK! will be February 11 through 27, Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays at 8 pm. with Sunday matinees on February 21 at 5 pm. Tickets are $20 for General Admission. A limited amount of $10 student rush tickets are available for students 18 years and younger with valid student ID ten minutes before showtime. Tickets may be purchased online or at the Box Office an hour before show time.
